Aerolase

The Aerolase® LightPod Neo is an FDA approved, safe, and gentle aesthetic laser that utilizes a unique 650-microsecond laser technology. This laser delivers energy to the skin 30-50 times faster than other lasers, which allows patients of all skin types to receive pain-free treatment without the use of messy cooling gels or anesthetics.

The Aerolase is commonly used for the following conditions:

Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses a combination of heat and energy to destroy the hair follicle without harming the skin around it. The LightPod Neo laser offers patients a uniquely pain-free and gentle way to get rid of any unwanted hair. Most patients who have been treated by other lasers say that being treated with the LightPod Neo is much gentler and more pleasant. During laser hair removal, the hair must be in its growing phase in order to be successfully destroyed. To ensure that all hair is effectively removed during the growing phase, you will receive a series of treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart. This will successfully ensure maximum results.

Some patients will not respond as well as others. Patients with dark hair will respond best. Those patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) may also have a less than optimal response to laser hair removal.

Patients who are sunburned should wait until the burn subsides. Herpes Simplex Labialis (fever blisters/ cold sores) can be activated by laser treatment, especially on the upper lip, and patients with a tendency for fever blistering can be started on antiviral medication before treatment.

PFB

PFB (Pseudofolliculitis Barbae, i.e. ingrown hairs, razor bumps or beard bumps) is an irritating condition that is commonly caused by shaving. It often appears in patients with darker skin. The laser selectively targets melanin in the underlying hair and follicle, as well as hyperpigmentation surrounding the lesion. Because of the 650-microsecond pulse duration, the energy passes through the skin quickly and does not overheat the epidermal melanin to effectively treat the condition.

FAQ’s – Hair & PFB Removal with LightPod Neo

Patients that should not be treated include:

those who are pregnant
those who are sunburned or have irritated skin in the sites to be treated
those who have healed poorly after other types of laser treatments
patients prone to skin discoloration
patients who are taking photosensitizing medication, such as Accutane, should discontinue the medication 6 months before treatment
patients who are using topical retinoids should avoid use 1-2 weeks prior to treatment

Setting expectations

A very good result with LHR is when approx. 15% clearance is achieved in each treatment session, and a final outcome of clearance of 80% or more after 6 treatments is exceptional.  Also, some patients will respond very little, or not at all, even if all the settings and technique are properly applied; this is most likely due to hormonal conditions or other medical issues.

  • The patient should shave 2 or 3 days before the procedure, leaving small 2 to 3mm stubs of hair.

  •
  • This can vary depending on skin and hair color, but generally 4 to 6 sessions are required for 80% clearance or greater, which is considered very good in aesthetic laser medicine. After that, an annual maintenance treatment is recommended.

  •

The laser energy is absorbed by pigment in actively growing hair, damaging the hair follicle and thus, hair regrowth is impeded, reducing and eliminating the bumps caused by ingrown hairs.

No. Anesthetics and cooling gels are not needed with LightPod Neo, because MicroPulse-1064 makes it uniquely pain-free. However, some buildup of heat will be experienced

No, there is just a mild, very tolerable sensation of heat. This is one of the key technical breakthroughs of Aerolase technology! The LightPod Neo has set a new standard for virtually pain-free treatment, even on darker skin types, thanks to MicroPulse-1064 technology.

If the laser lens and fluence setting are chosen correctly, many hairs will singe upon contact with the laser beam and will disappear. Some hairs which are in a dormant growth phase will not respond at all, although some of them will be damaged even if they did not singe. Those which are damaged may fall out within a few days after treatment or even immediately if the treatment site is rubbed.

The FDA requires that laser manufacturers describe the process as “permanent hair reduction”, not “permanent hair removal”, because, in their words, “although laser treatments with these devices will permanently reduce the total number of body hairs, they will not result in a permanent removal of all hair.” Patients can generally expect more than 75% to 80% clearance after 6 sessions and should plan on 1 or 2 annual follow up sessions for ideal maintenance.

Veins

The LightPod Neo is able to safely treat a broad range of visible blood vessels from angiomas to spider veins. The Neo delivers a pulse of laser energy, which will cause the blood within the vein to coagulate and destroy the vessel, which will absorbed by your body over several weeks to leave your skin looking rejuvenated and youthful. No matter what part of your body is affected, the LightPod Neo can safely and effectively take care of any unwanted veins.The LightPod Neo is able to safely treat a broad range of visible blood vessels from angiomas to spider veins. Contraindications

Patients that should not be treated include:

those who are sunburned or have irritated skin in the sites to be treated
those who are exhibiting unidentified skin conditions in the sites to be treated
those who have healed poorly after other types of laser treatments
patients prone to skin discoloration

Setting expectations

Some patients will respond better than others and the number of treatments for each vessel may depend on the darkness and size of the vessel as well as the amount of activity the patient undergoes post-treatment. Vessels treated on the legs have a higher tendency to resurface, as the blood pressure tends to be higher. After treatment, a rust-colored staining of adjacent skin tissue, called hemosiderin, may appear from the breakdown of hemoglobin and will subside over the course of 3-4 weeks.

    • This can vary depending on the size and color of the vessel. Typically angiomas and spider veins will disappear completely after 1-2 treatments although in some cases more treatments may be necessary.

    •
    • No. Anesthetics and cooling gels are not needed with LightPod Neo, because MicroPulse-1064 makes it uniquely pain-free.

    •
  • There is a mild sensation of heat that is very tolerable.

  •
  • Many vessels will be gone permanently, but due to the skin aging, continued sun exposure and hormonal changes, new vessels will likely develop over time and more treatments will need to be performed. To slow the aging process and reduce the likeliness of new vessels developing, patients should always apply sunblock when in the sun and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

  •
  • The vascular lesion may appear to look like a cat scratch for 3-4 weeks. It will eventually scab over and slough off so it is important to always keep the area moist as to reduce the risk of scarring.

Rosacea & Redness

Rosacea is a chronic disorder that is characterized by facial flushing and with time the gradual development of persistent facial redness and spider-like blood vessels. It is often punctuated by episodes of inflammatory papules (bumps), pustules (pimples), and swelling.  Other conditions resulting in redness may be attributed by other factors such as exposure to UV rays and lifestyle can also be addressed by LightPod lasers. The laser light destroys visible blood vessels or reduces extensive redness. The LightPod Neo laser emits pulses of light that target tiny blood vessels just under the skin. Heat from the laser’s energy builds in the vessels, causing them to disintegrate.

Patients who are sunburned should wait until the burn subsides. Herpes Simplex Labialis (fever blisters) can be activated by laser treatment, especially on the upper lip, and patients with a tendency for fever blistering can be started on antiviral medication before treatment.

Setting expectations

Some patients or lesions may not respond as well as others. Rosacea lesions tend to subside after the first or subsequent treatments. Regardless of the treatment response, recurrence is common and can be caused by a number of lifestyle factors. It is important to understand that rosacea is a chronic condition that can only be controlled rather than cured.

    • Individual results will vary, but can depend on the body surface that is affected. While some patients may see relief in just one treatment, other patients may need a number of treatments to achieve their desired result.

While rosacea is not curable, it can be controlled with laser light so that the redness will decrease. While rosacea may improve with treatment and even be gone for a number of months, it may never completely go away.

  •
        • Actually, the LightPod Neo is the safest laser in the industry for darker skin types or tanned skin. This is because of MicroPulse-1064 technology, which essentially eliminates treatment pain while minimizing the chances of hyper and/ or hypo-pigmentation. Patients with skin types IV-VI should be treated very cautiously, especially in the facial region, as they pose a higher risk of having hyper and/or hypo-pigmentations.

Melasma

Melasma is a very common patchy brown, tan, or blue-gray facial skin discoloration, primarily seen on the upper cheeks, lip, forehead and chin of women.  Common predisposing factors include hormone exposure (pregnancy, birth control pills), excessive sunlight exposure, and genetic factors.   People with olive or darker skin, such as Hispanic, Asian, and Middle Eastern individuals, have higher incidences of melasma. The LightPod Neo can safely and effectively treat pigmented areas, resulting in an even and uniform skin tone.

Setting expectations

Some patients may not respond as well as others. Melasma lesions tend to darken after the first or subsequent treatments. Key factors in terms of treatment response are whether there is a sufficient melanin in the affected area, the depth of the lesion, and other factors. Regardless of the treatment response, recurrence is common and can be caused by factors such as sun exposure, genetic disposition and hormones. It is important to understand that melasma, like eczema and psoriasis, is a chronic condition that can be controlled rather than cured.

    • This can vary depending on the size density of melanin and depth of the affected area. Typically melasma will lighten or dissapear completely after 1-2 treatments although in some cases more treatments may be necessary.

      •
      • Typically, melasma will slowly lighten over the course of the next few days to weeks as the pigmented area is slowly absorbed into the skin by your body’s natural healing process. In some cases, the pigment will darken before becoming lighter. In the event that any crusting or scabbing occurs, it is important to always keep the area moist as to reduce the risk of scarring.

Acne

Acne is a common condition across both youths and adults. This causes blemishes on the skin and can lead to scarring if not treated properly. Until recently, patients could only be treated by topical or oral medications. Now, the LightPod Neo laser can result in substantial improvement for the treatment of acne and acne scars. The laser’s energy effectively destroys the p. acne bacteria, while restoring collagen to damaged skin. The result is a significant clearance of active acne and visible acne scars.

      • Improvement may be seen after only one treatment, but best clearance is achieved after 3 sessions.  Some patients may worsen before getting better.

        • Yes, during the normal course of acne treatment the laser light will also help to lessen any cratering or pock marks caused by acne. This is enabled by the laser light superheating the water within the skin’s dermis and helping rebuild and regrow both collagen and elastin, effectively helping smooth out any imperfections left behind from acne.

Nail Fungus

Onychomycosis, or nail fungus, is an infection of the toenail in which the nail changes color,

thickness and quality. In addition of causing an unhealthy appearance, it can cause pain and difficulty walking.

Laser treatment for nail fungus is safe, quick and highly effective. Most patients are able to be clear of their infection with only one or two treatments. Laser procedures for nail fungus are proven to be a much safer and effective method as compared to oral medications or topical creams. One of the key aspects of eradicating nail fungus is to achieve penetration of the laser energy into the nail bed. This area needs significant heating to ensure the fungal material is destroyed, which requires a deep-heating and powerful laser. The LightPod Neo offers patients the ideal laser for such treatment. After the treatment, patients are able to resume their daily activities as normal.

Results are not immediate, as it takes anywhere from 3-12 months for the new, non-infected nail to grow. It is recommended that patients follow this preventive care regiment to avoid reinfection:

  1. Apply an antifungal cream for 2 weeks following the procedure;
  2. Always spray inside the shoes at the end of the day with an antifungal spray and avoid wearing the shoes for 2 days or use Steri-Shoe ultraviolet shoe sanitizers;
  3. After 2 weeks, spray the feet or fingers with anti-fungal spray on an ongoing basis;
  4. Change the sheets the 1st night after each treatment;
  5. Cleanse the floor of the shower before next use with a cleanser that includes bleach;
  6. Cleanse all nail instruments with bleach before using them again;
  7. Throw out any nail polish previously used on the nails;
  8. Exercise caution in public areas like hotel rooms and public showers.

Patients who are sunburned should wait until the burn subsides. Patients with severe Onychomycosis and completely destroyed matrix may not respond as well as others. Diabetic patients may have a loss of feeling in their lower extremities.

Setting expectations

Some patients will respond better than others depending on the severity of the condition and how well the patient adheres to the recommended after treatment care. While some patients may be no longer be infected, their nail may not return to it’s natural color. Reinfection rate is high, especially in elderly patients and continuous foot care and monitoring their feet is the best regiment to deter reinfection.

    • his can vary depending on skin and severity of the condition, but generally 4 to 6 sessions are required to achieve a good result. After that, the patient may need maintenance every few months depending on their skin type.

This is one of the key technical breakthroughs of Aerolase technology! The LightPod Neo has set a new standard for virtually pain-free treatment, even on darker skin types, thanks to MicroPulse-1064 technology. This unique benefit saves time, cost and mess by eliminating gels and sprays required by other lasers that cool the skin during treatment.

    •
        • The laser light passes through the nail and skin to reach the nail bed and matrix. The laser light selectively targets the fungal infection to superheat the fungal structures in order to effectively eradicate them. It is generally agreed upon that a heat of at least 45 degrees Celsius is necessary to kill fungus, which is why the LightPod Neo’s unique high power in a short pulse duration makes the treatment so effective yet tolerable.

        •
  • Fungal infections are highly contagious and can eventually spread to other nails. Since some nails may be infected without showing any signs of infection it is recommended that all nails be treated with the laser as a precautionary measure.

  •
  • Nail fungus has a higher reoccurrence than most treatments due to the complexity of the situation and number of steps and care needed to effectively kill an initial infection in the first place. While nails can commonly be successfully treated, there is a strong focus on deterring reinfection by consistently adhering to patient aftercare and attention to foot care.

  •
  • To successfully eradicate nail fungus and improve the condition and color of a nail is a long process that includes both time and consistent foot care to deter reinfection. It takes a nail anywhere from 9-12 months to completely grow out so it is important to be patient and adhere to the after care directions you are given. Immediately after treatment you will not notice any differences in your nail and may continue your day normally. As the nail grows out you should start to see clear nail growth, which will continue as long as reinfection does not occur.
